Whether a hardware wallet is worth the cost for on-chain competition has a threshold answer. A hardware wallet costs $70–$250 depending on the model. Paid hardware wallets (Ledger, Trezor, ColdCard) store the private key on a dedicated signing device that never exposes it to internet-connected software. Price: $70–$250. Signing requires physical device confirmation. Appropriate for any amount; essential when total BTC held makes loss significant.

Lightning wallets — Phoenix, Breez, Zeus — manage payment channels on the Lightning Network. They cannot send mainnet Bitcoin transactions, which is what on-chain competition requires. A competition entry must be a confirmed mainnet Bitcoin transaction visible on a block explorer. Lightning payments are not mainnet transactions and cannot produce a valid on-chain competition entry. Open-source wallet code (BlueWallet, Electrum, Green) has been independently audited by security researchers. Closed-source wallet code cannot be independently verified — a meaningful distinction when choosing the software responsible for sending competition entries and receiving prizes.
