During low-traffic windows (weekends, off-peak hours), the next-block fee rate averages 2–4 sat/vbyte. During high-traffic windows (market volatility events, end-of-month congestion), it reaches 30–80 sat/vbyte. Wallet defaults calibrated to average conditions perform poorly at both extremes.

Mid-round entry — mempool-calibrated: median 5.2 sat/vbyte; wallet default: median 9.1 sat/vbyte; median overpayment: 890 satoshis.

Final-phase entry (less than 30 minutes before close) — mempool-calibrated to next-block: median 12.4 sat/vbyte; wallet default: median 10.3 sat/vbyte; in this phase, wallet defaults sometimes underpaid — 31% of final-phase wallet-default transactions confirmed after round close.

In the final phase, the wallet default underperformed because it was calibrated to average conditions, not to the elevated traffic that often accompanies a close-approaching deadline.

The mempool also tells you when not to pay a high fee. If the next-block fee is 45 sat/vbyte but the "next 30 minutes" fee is 12 sat/vbyte, and the timing window allows a 30-minute wait, the lower fee rate is correct.
